How to get a 1 yr old to pose for a Holiday Card & 1 Creative Dad-Photographer

The Answer? You don't.  After a few days and a few hundred photos, I gave up on the thought that I would be able to get a smiling, non-moving picture of my crazy Cecilia.  But thats ok. As frustrating as the mini-photoshoots may have seemed, I know I will look back at this years card and laugh.  I definately love this spunky, adventurous age that I'm sure will go by too fast!

Speaking of photography, I have had this article bookmarked for quite a while, but figured it would be fun to share, especially this time of year.  Have you seen Jason Lee's photographs of his two girls? So creative and fun!!  Here are a few of my favorites from the set:

You can read more about Jason and his photographs from an interview he did over at Alice's blog.

If I knew anything about Photoshop I would totally try to do something similar to this picture of Ceci.  Totally cute, but horribly messy, mid-playtime background!

Holiday Garland

Have you seen this felt garland on Purlbee? It looks so festive and seems to be doable, even for me; I may have to try it out if I can find some time after my finals.  I think this could look great wrapped around a staircase. I can't believe tomorrow is December!! December 1st always seems like the official beginning of the holiday season to me.

Do you have any Holiday crafting going on in your house?

Diaper Changing Evolution?

 via

Has anyone used this BabySmart Cooshee changer before? I have never seen one that didn't need a cover; this seems like a great idea.  I have to wash my changing pad covers all the time and this seems like a great alternative.  A simple wipe down with a wipe seems like it would do the trick.  I love the colors itcomes in as well! I think this may have to be one of my next purchases!

Does anyone know where to find this wallpaper??

I have an idea to cover some cheap roller shades in it for my daughter's new bedroom - any help would be great!

Make a beeline to target for their B. brand toys!

Ok, so I'm clearly not the best with coming up with catchy post titles, but have you seen the B. toy collection at target?! They are so unique and come in great colors that wont stand out like a sore thumb in your living room!  Below are some of my favorites:

Livingroom Dreams

So I FINALLY have found the perfect inspiration photo(s) to emulate my home from - I'm so excited! It's hard to start decorating with no clear vision in mind, and in the past this has always lead to me collecting a bunch of odds and ends that I like for a while, but inevitably end up selling on Craigslist.  Meet my inspiration photo:

I found this photo in a House Tour on Apartment Therapy and was in love from the start.  So far, I have used the paint colors mentioned by this homeowner in my hallway and kitchen, and used the kitchen color she has mentioned in my living room.  I chose to use the lighter color in my living room because I have dark brown couches and not alot of natural light.  I love the darker color walls, the pops of white, and the overall casual feel and the mixes of old and new through out the home.

These are the current pieces I'm thinking of purchasing to add to my livingroom, with this look and feel in mind:

This sideboard, which has glass doors, perfect for displaying family photos while keeping grabby baby hands at bay.

This comfy chair which will add seating and the convience of a slipcover, for easy cleaning.

And this great ottoman to add a pop of color to the neutral space, featured this morning over at one of my go to blogs.

I'm hoping to get a few of these pieces soon, or even find similar looking pieces on Craigslist!

Ottoman Ideas

The latest Ottomans from the West Elm collection have me wanting to add a pop of pattern to our somewhat boring living room.  Any ideas on how to DYI an ottoman for less than half the $499 price of this beauty??

Entertaining this Fourth of July?

My family and I are headed to the family Summer House in Cape Ann, MA for the long weekend, but if I were entertaining, the festivities would definitely include the following!

These amazingly cute e-invitations from Paperless Post, which deserves it's own post soon.  this company has revolutionized the e-vite scene!

I would make these pretzels

and for dessert I would attempt this fabulous cake

Whatever your plans are for this Holiday weekend, I hope you get to take some time to relax and have fun!

Affordable Father's Day (or any day) Fun

I was at the bank the other day and noticed an advertisement for free Museum entrance for Bank of America card holders on the screen at the ATM Machine.  At home, I went online and sure enough, if you are a BoA card holder, you and your family can get free entrance into a bunch of Museums nationwide, the first weekend of every month.  I'm always looking for affordable activities to do with my family, so this is right up my ally!  Unfortunately there aren't any local museums that are part of this promotion, however if you want to see what locations are included in your area, you can find out here.

Some museums that are involved include:

The Detroit Science Center - MI

Garden State Discovery Museum - NJ

High Museum of Art - GA

Hopefully this program will be extended to more locations, I would love to take advantage of it!

Less really is more - Kid's Toys

 via

My daughter is only 9 months old but she has accumulated an insane amount of toys already.  Our playroom was starting to overwhelm me, and I think overwhel her too. It seemed as though she didn't really have interest in all the toys around her.

Friday afternoon I decided to pack up a majority of the toys and put them in storage bins in her closet.  I then took out two open baskets and filled them with a few toys each.  I'm going to try this method for a while, interchanging the toys every few days to add some variety.  Hopefully paring them down will be less overwhelming for us all.  And as an added bonus, my house will look less like a Daycare Center!

New header in the works

Happy almost Friday! I'm working on creating a header for this blog, but in the meantime a quickly created one using this beautiful Schumacher Trellis Print, which can be found as fabric in this great "Pool" color.  Doesn't it make you think of summer?!

Making my House my Home

I'll admit, I'm a little design obsessed, which has proven to be both a positive and negative.  My head is filled with creative and inspiring ideas on how to design and update living spaces.  However, with so much inspiration floating around, I often find myself paralyzed when it comes to actually biting the bullet and updating my current house. I always begin to wonder half-way through a project if I have made the right decision or have chosen the right color scheme.

I'm really motivated this time to get the ball rolling and start making some updates to my house, which although purchased two years ago, still feels more like a house than my home.  I've decided to start the process by looking through all the images I have flagged over the past two years on my computer, and more recently, on Pintrest (what a GREAT organizational resource by the way!).  I think once I look through these images I will be able to better determine my style, and can go from there, which will hopefully make me second guess myself less!

So, to make what has become a long story short; to begin to make my house my family's home, I am going to 1) Define my style 2) Begin to update one room at a time in an attempt to not become overwhelmed 3) Do this all on an INSANELY small budget, as I am a full-time Nursing student, mom, and wife, who recently got laid off and had both our family cars die in the past six month! (How's that for reality haha).

I'm determined to create beautiful home and more importantly, a beautiful life, for my family and I to live in amidst all the chaos that is the real world.

Garage Sale Recap

The neighborhood garage sales were not that great this weekend; there seemed to be mostly junk.  However I did happen to score two glass pillar candle holders, almost identical to these Pottery Barn ones.

The Pottery Barn versions run $29.95 for the Medium (the size of mine).  I picked up two for $0.50 each- not too bad!  I was also able to find a little shelf to go above the changing table which will house everyday used items.  Now that my daughter is mobile, its almost too dangerous to even lean over to dig through the changing table shelves without the fear of her throwing herself off the table!

Garage Sale Time

I'm off to a few Neighborhood Garage Sales today. I'll be back to show you what I got; I'm hoping for some great "before" pieces for some before and after projects!

I Heart Craigslist

I browse Craigslist often, looking to find some great, affordable ways to help decorate my home. Today I decided to browse the "free" section, not planning on finding anything great; I was wrong!  Check out this slightly-kitchy, uniquely shaped chair I found; I think it would be great reupholstered in a fun pattern for a kids room, playroom, or den! I recently had a chair reupholstered for my daughters room, I'll be sure to post that soon.

I think I'm going to start posting reasons I heart Craigslist weekly; it will help keep me, and hopefully you, inspired!

Shabby Apple Love

I have loved the woman's dresses from Shabby Apple for years now, but just realized they have children clothes as well! Am I the only one that didn't know this? Either way, their beautiful girls dresses don't disappoint, and the prices don't either.

This is my favorite dress that I think my daughter needs; what a great modern take on the classic pillow case dress!

The BEST Baby Pajamas

1.2.3.
There is nothing better than soft, cotton, pajamas for little ones. Hatley and Hana Anderson have some of the best in my opinion; they have great prints and wash up so well! And being from the Saratoga area, I am partial to the horse and Adirondack prints Hatley offers! Check out more here!

Happy Mothers Day

In honor of Mothers Day, I thought I would re-post this hilarious reading, "A Mother's Prayer for her Child", written by Tina Fey, in her new book BossyPants.

First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.

May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty.

When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer.

Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.

Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels. What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit.

May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers.

Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen.Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.

O Lord, break the Internet forever, that she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed.

And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it.

And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back. “My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.
Amen.”

Lay of the Land

I take pride in pulling together our townhouse to look cozy and “decorated” on a miniscule budget, and even with baby paraphernalia all around, I thought our house was going to be perfect for our little family.  Then said baby became mobile.

OMG does that little love scoot around and get into everything, and she cant even crawl yet!

So, to make a long story short, I’ve decided to attempt to rearrange my modest size home to make more room for my baby to move and play, without having to push all the couches against to walls and wrap the dining room table in bubble wrap.

Does anyone  have any suggestions on how they have coped with the constant influx of walkers/joggers/strollers/stuffed animals and an extremely curious baby while maintaining a stylish home that they can entertain in? Is this even possible? Suggestions Welcome!

Who doesn't need coffee in the morning?

I'm a sucker for Dunkins Iced Coffee, but when I heard about the 99 cent ANY SIZED Iced Coffee at Cumberland Farms, I decided to take the risk and try... and I'm so glad I did! For 99 cents I was able to get my coffee fix and choose from a ton of sugar-free flavor shots - I'm definitely a convert.  The only down side I see is that there is no Drive Through, and I do love convenience.  But to save between 1-2 dollars a day, I really think its worth it! (And no, Cumberland Farms is not paying me for this, I just love a great deal!)
